Kawasaki Z900 ECU Flash: Complete Guide

Kawasaki Z900 ECU Flash Guide

The Z900 is one of the best-selling big nakeds in Europe, and its inline four rewards a good calibration. From the factory it runs lean at small throttle openings, with an abrupt pick-up from a closed throttle and limits written for emission tests. A flash fixes the parts riders feel every day.

Which ECU does the Z900 have?

The 2017 to 2019 Z900 is listed in both its full-power and 70 kW (A2) versions. From 2020 the Z900 can be flashed through the diagnostic connector. The 2025 model uses Kawasaki’s new RH850 ECU, which is an add-on. Not sure which method suits you? Read OBD vs bench flashing.

What riders change on a Z900

  • Throttle response. A smoother pick-up from a closed throttle.
  • Fuelling. Richer at small throttle openings, and corrected for an aftermarket exhaust.
  • Fan temperature. Lower, for town riding.
  • Rev limiter.
  • Systems removed for track use.

How to flash a Z900, step by step

  1. Put the battery (or bench power supply) on a stable source.
  2. 2020 to 2024: connect a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 or CANable to the diagnostic connector. For the bench method, remove the ECU and wire it to a USB-TTL adapter with the diagram from your MotoFlasher account.
  3. Read the ECU and save the stock file.
  4. Edit the file in TunerPro or load a file from your tuner.
  5. Write the file. MotoFlasher corrects the checksum.
  6. Refit the ECU if it was removed, then start the bike and check it.
Before you flash: keep the battery on a charger, save the original file somewhere safe, and never disconnect the cable while a write is running. Changes to emissions-related settings may only be legal for off-road or competition use where you live.
