OBD vs Bench ECU Flashing: Tactrix, CANable, KKL or USB-TTL?
There are two ways to connect to a motorcycle ECU. OBD flashing goes through the bike’s diagnostic connector with the ECU still fitted. Bench flashing means taking the ECU out and connecting to it directly. Which one you use depends on the ECU, not on preference.
OBD flashing (through the diagnostic connector)
Most bikes made in the last ten years talk to the outside world over CAN bus or K-line through their diagnostic plug, and the ECU can be read and written that way. Nothing comes apart: plug in, read, write, done. Examples: the Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09 with the CAN-flashable Denso ECU, every KTM, Triumph, Aprilia and BMW we support, Honda’s RH850 bikes and the Bosch-equipped Chinese brands.
Bench flashing (ECU removed)
Many Denso ECUs used by Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha cannot be written through the diagnostic plug, or only partly. They are read and written on the bench: the ECU comes out of the bike and is wired directly to the interface, and the processor is started in its programming mode. It takes longer but gives full access to the memory. MotoFlasher users get the wiring diagram for each ECU in their account.
Which interface does what
| Interface | Connection | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 | CAN and K-line | Most OBD flashing: CAN bikes, the K-line Honda, Mitsubishi and Ducati ECUs, and Kawasaki’s RH850 ECU |
| CANable | CAN | CAN bikes: KTM, Triumph, Aprilia, BMW, Bosch-equipped Chinese brands, and the Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, KTM and Triumph RH850 ECUs |
| USB-KKL (Lonelec / KKL) | K-line | Older K-line ECUs (Honda M32R, Mitsubishi) and Kawasaki’s RH850 ECU |
| USB-TTL (FT232) | Serial, on the bench | Denso SH705x and M32R ECUs read on the bench |
How to know which one your bike needs
Look your bike up in the brand guides. Every model lists its ECU and the interface it works with. Some models appear twice, once for the CAN method and once for the bench method, because the same ECU can be reached either way.
Tactrix or CANable?
For CAN-only bikes both work. The Tactrix also covers K-line, so it reaches more bikes with one cable. A CANable is cheaper and is a good choice if all your bikes are CAN.
Frequently asked questions
Can every motorcycle ECU be flashed through the OBD plug?
No. Many older Denso ECUs used by Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha have to be read on the bench with the ECU removed.
Is bench flashing risky?
Not if the wiring is right and the power supply is stable. Bench access is often the most complete and reliable way to read the ECU.
Do I need both a Tactrix and a USB-TTL adapter?
Only if you work on both CAN or K-line bikes and bench-read Denso ECUs. Check the brand guide for your bikes.
