Yamaha MT-09 ECU Flash: Complete Guide
The MT-09’s CP3 triple is one of the most characterful engines on the road, and also one of the most famous for its abrupt throttle on early bikes. A flash smooths the response, corrects the fuelling for an exhaust and removes the limits that hold the engine back.
Which ECU does the MT-09 have?
| Years | ECU | Method | Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 to 2019 | Denso SH7058F (Yamaha CAN) | Through the diagnostic connector | Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 or CANable |
| 2014 to 2019 | Denso SH7058F | Bench, ECU removed | USB-TTL (FT232) |
| 2020 to 2025 | Denso RH850 (Yamaha CAN) | Through the diagnostic connector | Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 or CANable |
The first-generation MT-09 can be flashed either way. From 2020 the MT-09 uses the newer RH850 ECU, which is an add-on. The Tracer 900 and Tracer 9 follow the same pattern: SH7058F from 2017 to 2020, RH850 from 2021.
What riders change on an MT-09
- Throttle response. Taming the snatchy pick-up of the early bikes is the most common reason to flash.
- Fuelling. Richer at small throttle openings, and corrected for an aftermarket exhaust.
- Fan temperature.
- Rev limiter.
- Systems removed for track use.
How to flash an MT-09, step by step
- Put the battery on a charger.
- Connect a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 or CANable to the diagnostic connector (or, for the bench method on 2014 to 2019 bikes, remove the ECU and wire it with the diagram from your MotoFlasher account).
- Read the ECU and save the stock file.
- Edit the file in TunerPro or load a file from your tuner.
- Write the file. MotoFlasher corrects the checksum.
- Start the bike and check the idle and the warning lights.

Frequently asked questions
Can I flash an MT-09 without removing the ECU?
Yes. Every MT-09 from 2014 to 2025 can be flashed through the diagnostic connector with a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 or CANable.
Do I need an add-on for the 2020+ MT-09?
Yes. The 2020 to 2025 MT-09 uses the Denso RH850 (Yamaha CAN) ECU, which is an add-on.
Is the Tracer 9 supported?
Yes: the Tracer 900 from 2017 to 2020 on the SH7058F, and the Tracer 9 from 2021 on the RH850.
