Why flash a Kawasaki ECU?

Kawasaki builds strong engines and then tunes them for emission tests: lean fuelling at small throttle openings, restricted torque in the lower gears on several models and a fan that switches on late. Riders feel it as surging at constant speed, a hesitant pick-up and heat in town, especially after fitting a freer-flowing exhaust.

Flashing the ECU changes the maps the engine actually runs on. Fuel, ignition, throttle and limits are set in one file, with no extra module in the wiring.

Kawasaki ECU families

Kawasaki has used more ECU suppliers than any other brand, so it pays to know which one you have:

  • Denso SH7052F / SH7054F / SH7055F / SH7058F and M32R: most Ninja, Z, Versys and ER-6 models over the years. Flashed on the bench through a USB-TTL adapter.
  • Denso SH7058F (Kawasaki CAN): Ninja 400, Z650, Z900, Versys 650 and other recent models, flashed through the diagnostic connector with a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 or CANable.
  • Mitsubishi MH82xx / MH8102F / MH8115F: ZX-10R, ZX-14R, Ninja H2, GTR1400 and W 800, over K-Line with a Tactrix or KKL interface.
  • Mitsubishi RH850 (Kawasaki CAN): the newest ZX-10R, ZX-4RR, ZX-25R, Z900, Z1000SX and Versys 1100. Available as an add-on.
  • Keihin M16C: the KX 250, KX 450 and KLX 250 off-road bikes.

What riders change on a Kawasaki

  • Smoother part-throttle fuelling and no surging at steady speeds.
  • Torque limits in first and second gear on the models that have them.
  • Fuel and ignition matched to an exhaust or intake change.
  • Rev limiter and fan switch-on temperature.
  • Track and off-road settings on race and KX builds.

Flashing a Kawasaki, step by step

  1. Keep the battery on a charger.
  2. Connect over the diagnostic port for CAN and Mitsubishi ECUs, or bench-wire the Denso units.
  3. Read the ECU and store the original file.
  4. Edit your maps or load the file from your tuner.
  5. Write it back. MotoFlasher corrects the checksum.

Frequently asked questions

Can I flash a Kawasaki Ninja 400 or Z900 without removing the ECU?

Yes on the CAN models (Denso SH7058F Kawasaki CAN and Mitsubishi RH850): they are flashed through the diagnostic connector. Earlier Denso ECUs are flashed on the bench. The table above shows the method for each year.

Can I remove the low-gear torque limits?

On the models that have them, the limits live in the ECU calibration and can be adjusted in your tuning editor once you have read the file.

Do I need the RH850 add-on for my Kawasaki?

Only for the newest models with a Mitsubishi RH850 ECU, marked “Add-on” in the table. All other Kawasaki ECUs are included.

Are KX and KLX off-road bikes supported?

Yes: the KX 250, KX 450 and KLX 250 with a Keihin M16C ECU.

Can I go back to stock?

Yes. Write the original file you read first back to the ECU.
